The Art of the Leu Family by Aia Leu

Size: 28.5 x 24.5 cm - Pages: 192 - Published: 2013 - Price: $62 - Binding: Softcover

This book is a brilliant little window into the vibrant world that is the Leu family. The artwork within reflects the nature of the individuals who conceived it and illustrates the talent and energy that drives this family, now four generations strong, to continue create and share.

...from the inside cover.....
With a unique approach, this colourful book illustrates the work of a creative family of artists from Switzerland, spanning the years 1953 to the present. Eva Aeppli the first wife of Jean Tinguely, was the artistic pioneer of the family. Her children are Felix Leu aka Don Feliz and Miriam Tinguely.
Felix went on with his wife Loretta Leu aka Y Maria to raise a family, many of them artists who with their partners work in a wide variety of styles. The collection contains selections from Eva Aeppli's life work. Don Feliz's surrealistic psychedelic art, the mandala art of Y Maria, works from Miriam Tinguely, Filip Leu, Titine K-Leu, Aia Leu, Tanina Munchkina, Ajja S.F. Leu and some pieces by other members of the family.
Featuring a diversity of art with drawings, etchings, watercolours, paintings and sculptures from the many artists in this family. Throughout the generations represented here there has also been a tradition of collaborative works of art, and a selection of these are included.

Ukiyo-e to Horimono - by Jan Van Doesburg

Size: 24cm x 32cm - Pages: 320 - Published: 2013 - Price: $100 - Binding: Hardcover

This is a really informative book on the history of both Japanese woodblocks and Japanese tattooing. Covering the development of both from the floating world through to present day, it explores the Ainu Indians, the tattooed firefighters, kabuki actors, the yakuza and includes a brilliant section on iconography which explains the symbolism of popular Japanese motifs. It features full page, full color prints of tattoos in ukiyo-e, with full explanations in English. I highly recommend this book.

New Call for Art Submissions - Raijū, The Thunder Beast 雷獣

The Raijū is friends with Raijin, the Shinto god of lightning. He falls to earth in a blot of lightning and takes the form of one of the other henge (shapeshifters) – tanuki, weasel or kitsune, only he is wreathed in lightning. He can fly around at will as a ball of lightning and when lightning strikes it means the Raijū has clawed the ground. Because the Raijū has left claw marks on trees so people stay away from trees during thunderstorms lest they come face to face with the creature. He’s said to hate camels and if a camel image is put up, thunder will not come. Finally, he has an odd habit of making himself tiny and sleeping in people’s navels. When Raijin wants to wake him he shoots an arrow into the unsuspecting mortal’s bellybutton! The superstitious sleep on their stomachs during a storm.
